Why did you initially choose to work at ORBA? What stood out from other firms?

“I picked ORBA because it’s a great mid-sized company with a fantastic atmosphere. I knew I wouldn’t get lost in the shuffle.”
-Five-year staff person

“I was looking for a firm where I would have an opportunity to work with medium sized businesses and have exposure to their owners. What I remember as standing out from other firms was the genuine nature of the directors I interviewed with.”
-Six-year staff person

“I was in college and needed experience in an accounting-related job. A friend told me about a proofreading position. When I interviewed for that position, I felt at home and met many of the directors. I thought that it was impressive that directors would even care that a proofreader was being hired. Also, I thought the building was cool (I still do).”
-First-year staff person

“ORBA seemed professional but also laid back. When I was interviewing with the other firms they seemed all business and no smiles. ORBA people seemed to like their jobs. I believe that people working for good companies should appear to be happy. A positive attitude in a firm is important and I love it here.”
-Second-year staff person

“ORBA is great because it is large enough for variety and experience yet small enough to have the personal touch.”
-Three-year staff person

“Everyone I talked to when I was interviewing made sure that I knew ORBA was sort of like a family - a close group who worked well together as a team. What impressed me the most was the time everyone took to make me comfortable and answer all of my questions.”
-Two-year staff person

“The people definitely stood out here. I got to meet more people here during the recruiting process and there were more people around my age with similar interests. The atmosphere was much more laid back. The directors were all so approachable. And I loved the idea of no titles and advancing as fast or slow as I think I can handle. The firm was flexible and not as rigid as the big firms.”
-Four-year staff person

What would you say is the best aspect of ORBA?

“I had never been in such a professional setting in the middle of Chicago before, so I was a little nervous at the start, but the people here made me feel included. After being here a year, going through proofreading, an internship, and a few audits, I think that the best aspect of ORBA is that they give you the opportunity to do many different things. People have given me responsibility and challenges that although frustrating at the start, I know is great for my career. Everyday I learn something new.”
-One-year staff person

“The best aspect of ORBA is the people. The work is the same no matter where you go, but the people make the environment enjoyable and easy to work for.”
-Four-year accounting services person

“The best aspect of ORBA is the work environment. There are no barriers that separate the staff from the directors. With the size of ORBA, you are able to get to know people on a more personal basis.”
-Six-year staff person

“The people. Most firms are pretty much the same - debits, credits, taxes, etc. We have a good group of staff who all work as a team.”
-Two-year staff person

“Respect and fairness, that’s important to me. Being a first year staff person I expected to be treated terribly, but my opinions and comments are looked at just like everyone else’s.”
-One-year staff person

What would you tell a potential recruit to convince them to join us?

“They will get great experience working with medium-sized businesses in accounting and tax. They will also have the opportunity to work and be taught by the firm’s directors.”
-Eight year staff person

“Larger firms might try to make you specialize in a small aspect of a job. ORBA lets you do a variety of work (i.e. taxes and audits) and that will help you no matter where you go in your career. Also, it is hard to know exactly what you want to do after college, so the exposure to different kinds of work can only help. Believe me, I’m no accounting guru, but my confidence to do the work and ask questions if I need help is far greater than a year ago because of the patience that people at ORBA have had with me.”
-One-year staff person

“We are not the traditional “boring bean counters.” Social lives are allowed! If it is professionalism with with a modern attitude the recruits are looking for, then ORBA is the place to go”.
-Two-year staff person

“This firm is a great place to learn all aspects of accounting. You will be able to do everything from planning the audit through the tax return if that is what you want to do. You are able to get a taste of everything and that is important for someone just starting in the accounting field.”
-Three-year staff person

“At my other firm partners would dump work on me with no guidance and the partner was never available for questions, yet they expected perfect work. At ORBA, you will never get work dumped on you without any guidance. While sink or swim methodology sometimes works, some explanations and a little training go a lot further.”
