10 Things I’ve Never Heard a Successful Startup Founder Say, by Jason Cohen
A few of our favorites:
“Filling up the management team with my untrained relatives and acting on their advice over other employees’ made all the difference in ensuring our success”
Far too many have made this mistake, and have learned our lesson. We love our family and friends, but involving them in a start-up, unless they have specific, transferable skills, may not be the best decision. You live, you learn.
“Those arguments about the name, logo, and design color were critical to our eventual success with Enterprise customers!”
Logo and design are critical to creating a brand for yourself, there’s no denying that. But towards the end it can get extremely nit-picky, and you are losing sleep over tiny variances in shades of color or design. Those small changes probably don’t have much to do with your final success.
“The decision of whether to form an LLC, S-Corp, or C-Corp made a significant difference in my startup’s success.”
The type of legal/business entity your Startup is will impact your business down the road, but it’s not going to make or break your company. When it comes down to it, your Startup is successful because a great idea and the people that you work with to make it a reality. At the end of the day, a great Startup is successful because of a great idea and great people that can make that idea a reality. If you start off with the wrong business structure, it’s not the end of the world and can be changed later on.
